Note: (For the Artfutura Call to Artists, access http://www.fultonstreetcollective.com/artfutura-call-to-artists.html ) ArtFutura: Art in Motion 10th year anniversary Fundraiser connects the artworld to patients. The ArtFutura:Art in Motion Fundraiser Party will be celebrating its 10th Year anniversary of supporting RIC (Rehabiliation Institute of Chicago) and its Art Therapy program. Patients who have sustained brain or spinal cord injuries or stroke benefit greatly from RIC’s one-of-a kind transformative art therapy program, and ArtFutura has been supporting this important work for 10 years. This year RIC Associate Board, hosts of the event, celebrate with a new logo and a dynamic theme, “art in motion.” Art in Motion celebrates the efforts of artists, patient artists and Chicagoans who embrace art as a means to heal. This entertaining and prestigious event showcases the work of the 150 professional artists from across the country who submit their work, with finalists competing for prizes ranging from $300 to $1,000. The nation and citywide call to artists is open until April 2. James Rondeau, curator of the Modern Art Wing at the Art Institute of Chicago presides over the selection of finalists for this competitive art exhibition. The Opening Night Awards Party will be May 31 from 5:30 to 9:30 pm, and is just blocks from Chicago’s Museum of Contemporary Art at the Ryan Family Atrium of Northwestern’s Lurie Center, 303 East Superior Street. Advance tickets to ArtFutura: Art in Motion are $40 if purchased by May 1, and sponsorship opportunities are available. Proceeds from this event make it possible for over 100 pediatric and adult patients to have access to a new creative outlet during their hospital stay, enabling them to experience the healing and life-enhancing benefits of making art.The professional and patient artwork will be on display from May 31-June 7, and will be available for sale, with prices ranging from $200 to $750.Ticket and sponsorship information about ArtFutura 2012 can be found at http://on.fb.me/ArtinMotion "I feel strongly grateful to have an opportunity to participate in an event which benefits this vital and indispensable art therapy program that had so personally benefited me and my life. I feel as though I am a good example of how such programs can enrich the lives of those going through the arduous process of rehabilitation and recovery in a lasting and meaningful way. Now 14 years post injury, the craft that I learned in the art therapy program at RIC has not only become my means of financial independence, but also has led me to discover my passion and purpose in life, to be an artist.” --Mariam, Professional Artist and Former RIC Patient February 25th 01/28/2012
Upcoming "Somebody's Sins" Show! (Again and better than ever) _ JOE LANASA has been playing local area clubs since the late 90’s and his sound has grown and evolved along with the diverse crowds he plays for. His music is a blend of styles; garage-band, guitar-driven rock, punk, latin, and neo-spiritual rock anthems; with influences like early Springsteen, Jim Morrison to Van Morrison; Dylan, Marty Robbins, and Johnny Cash. None of which overshadow the emotion and style of his own heart and soul. “Somebody’s Sins” is an exciting new version of the band, consisting of Paul Bivans on drums, “Johnny 99” Flanagan on lead guitar, and Michael Krayniak on bass, accompanying Joe’s vocals and guitar. They are working on a new album which should be available in Spring of 2012. Look for them at clubs and festivals around the mid-west this year! February 25th, "Somebody's Sins" is playing at Friendly Tap (6733 Roosevelt Road) in Berwyn, IL! So far, it appears as though it is going to be a hell of a fun night. Don't miss it! Greater Chicago Church: Poetry Workshop It's not too late to sign up for the poetry workshop with Joanne Diaz, THIS Saturday, February 4 from 10am-noon. I've had a number of conversations with folks who feel a desire to write, but it hasn't yet reached draft form. That's perfectly OK. The morning will be spent engaged in writing exercises and include practical instruction to jump start you own writing. Bring your pen, blank notebook, your dreams to write poetry and you'll be set. For more seasoned writers, this will be a great way to keep 'priming the pump' and expand your own skills. The goal of this workshop is simply to equip writers and build community. Writing is typically very isolating, but we get a chance to do it together this weekend. Join us! It will be held at the Fulton Street Collective, at 2000 W. Fulton Street, Chicago, 60612, so you'll also get a sneak peek at a space where we'll be hosting some more great resourcing events in the future! There's free, ample street parking and easy public transport. E-mail me (heather.treadway@greaterchicagochurch.com) for more details and register using the link below! Happy writing, Heather Treadway http://form.jotform.com/form/13380921212 Saturday, January 21st, 10 PM 01/19/2012

Todd Siegel Art Show! Todd Siegel is an art teacher and artist living and working in Chicago. Every year he travels and works with international artists in a residency near Florence, Italy. This year he began focusing his work on the ideas, personal frustrations, and controversial topic of Education. Many of his ideas come from readings by writers such as Neil Postman, John Dewey, and others who write about alternative possibilities and understandings of the world of education. More ideas are personal and stem from frustrations of the recent distrust of teachers and people making decisions on educational institutions not thinking of the child as a learner or a human being. His other artworks stem from personal situations with his experience teaching. He thought it was appropriate to Include artwork from the after school art club. In his art club his students between the grades of 4th-6th have chosen to display one drawing from their sketchbooks. Monday, December 5th, 12th 11/21/2011
