Artist's StatementI create artwork to understand the creative and destructive relationship between the mind and the body. These internal and external forces often seek to dominate or subjugate each other resulting in vanity, insecurity, and the annihilation of self. When these forces are in balance they bring about self-awareness, insight, and harmony. My work explores these concepts by the deconstruction of the human condition into objective images and subjective themes. My work examines the physical, the cerebral, and the soul which attempts to bring these forces together.
I work as an artist and art therapist (ATR, LCPC). I currently work with United States military veterans at the Jesse Brown VA Medical Center in Chicago. My clinical work seeks to guide these men and women to improve insight, to cope with trauma and PTSD, and to transition from military deployment to civilian life. Art making provides a safe, nonjudgmental, and individualized transitional space space to comprehend experiences and to care for the wounds of the soul. |
